1927 Buffalo Head Nickel

The Philadelphia Mint struck 37,981,000 coins of the 1927 Buffalo Head Nickel. The Denver Mint coined 5,730,000 and the San Francisco Mint struck 5,730,000 coins.

Coins from the Philadelphia Mint were made with pretty good overall quality. Quite a few coins exist in very very nice condition. What is hard to find is mint state coins with exquisite details.

The coins from the Denver Mint were another story when it comes to quality. Most of coins have only average details and finding very nice coins will prove to be difficult. An interesting die variety exist with the 1927 Buffalo Head Nickel. Die overlapping caused some of the coin to be made with 3 1/2 legs on the buffalo. You can also find some coins with overlapping mintmarks.

The San Francisco Mint's coins are considered key date coins.
Most of the coins made had above average details. The problem is finding them. There are not a lot of the exceptional coins available for sale.

1937 Buffalo Head Nickel

The Philadelphia Mint went crazy again with 1937 Buffalo Head Nickel and minted 79,480,000 coins. Not as many as in 1936 but still a lot of coins. The run of coins was pretty good and uncirculated mint coins are very available. What is rare is coins in mint condition with perfect details. The Philadelphia Mint minted 5,769 proof 1937 Buffalo Head Nickels. This was the last year the proof coins were made for the Buffalo Nickel series.

The Denver Mint struck 17,826,000 coins. This was a very good run of coins. Coins with perfect details are available. An interesting variety exists for the 1937-d Buffalo Head Nickel. A 3 legged coin was minted when a mint worker made an adjustment to the reverse die. The 3 legged coin has become one of the most popular coins in the series.

The San Francisco Mint struck 5,635,000 coins. This also was a above average run of coins. Finding coins in uncirculated mint condition should be pretty easy.

1938-D Buffalo Head Nickel

The 1938 Buffalo Head Nickel was only minted at the Denver Mint. It is approximated the Denver Mint struck 6,620,000 coins. The run of coins minted was quite good and collectors should not have trouble in finding an uncirculated mint condition 1938 Buffalo Head Nickel.

1938 was the last year for the Buffalo Head series. Many of the coins made were bought up and stored by collectors and dealers because they thought the coins would be more valuable. The PCGS price guide shows a value of $20,000 for a coin in MS68 condition, but only $345 for a coin in MS67 condition.

1928 Buffalo Head Nickel

In 1928 the Philadelphia Mint made 23,411,000 coins. The 1928 Buffalo Head Nickel mint run of coins was overall a pretty good. You can find some very nice uncirculated coins that are still for sale. Finding mint condition coins with complete details might tough. The coins made in the late 20's had an overall decline in quality.

The Denver Mint made 6,436,000 coins in 1928. The overall quality of the Denver Mint's Buffalo Head coins was lousy. Not many very nice coins with above average details were struck. Coins with excellent details are not known to exist. The best news for collectors is that very nice coins are still available.

The San Francisco Mint struck 6,966,000 coins. The 1928 S Buffalo Head Nickel was a good mint run and many coins with above average details were made. Finding one should not be a problem.

1915 Buffalo Head Nickels

The Philadelphia Mint struck 20,986,220 of the 1915 Buffalo Head Nickels. Most of these coins were considered to be above average quality and very eye appealingĀ  coins to look at.

The Philadelphia Mint minted 1,050 Matte Proof Coins. It has been found that on a few of the Matte Proof Coins a small die crack is present on the reverse.

The Denver Mint coined 7,569,500 and the San Francisco Mint made 1,505,500 coins. The coins made at the Denver Mint were not made to with attention to detail and therefore finding a coin with nice detail and quality can be difficult. At the San Francisco Mint the coins that were struck have nice details. It was suspected that Proof dies made have been used when the coins were struck.

Some interesting varieties exist with the 1915 Buffalo Head Nickel.
Of the coins minted at the Philadelphia Mint their has been found some coins that have a little die doubling in the date area and also on some coins overlapping of the dies caused the third feather to be removed.

At the Denver Mint a Large D was over punched on smaller D and at the San Francisco Mint their were coins with re punched mint marks.
