1927 Buffalo Head Nickel

The Philadelphia Mint struck 37,981,000 coins of the 1927 Buffalo Head Nickel. The Denver Mint coined 5,730,000 and the San Francisco Mint struck 5,730,000 coins.

Coins from the Philadelphia Mint were made with pretty good overall quality. Quite a few coins exist in very very nice condition. What is hard to find is mint state coins with exquisite details.

The coins from the Denver Mint were another story when it comes to quality. Most of coins have only average details and finding very nice coins will prove to be difficult. An interesting die variety exist with the 1927 Buffalo Head Nickel. Die overlapping caused some of the coin to be made with 3 1/2 legs on the buffalo. You can also find some coins with overlapping mintmarks.

The San Francisco Mint’s coins are considered key date coins.
Most of the coins made had above average details. The problem is finding them. There are not a lot of the exceptional coins available for sale.

1923 Buffalo Head Nickel

In 1923 the government cranked up the production of the 1923 Buffalo Head Nickels. The Philadelphia Mint coined 35,715,000 coins and the San Francisco Mint struck 6,142,000 coins.

The quality of the Philadelphia Mint’s 1923 Buffalo Head Nickel is one of the best in the series. The other being the 1921 Buffalo Head Nickel also minted by the Philadelphia Mint. Finding a nice coin with very nice details should be easy.

The coins from the San Francisco Mint are just the opposite. It is easy to find coins in circulated condition but the really quality coins will be harder to find. The weak spots on the coins to look for are on the obverse in the braid area and on the reverse in the fur area on the buffalo’s head.
