1930 Buffalo Head Nickel

The 1930 Buffalo Head Nickel was only minted at 2 mints in 1930. The Philadelphia Mint struck 22,849,000 coins and the San Francisco Mint struck 5,345,000 strikes. The Denver Mint did not make any Buffalo Head Coins.

The Philadelphia Mint had an OK run of coins with most of the coins in the average range. Finding coins that are in near mint condition or above can be done, but it might take some looking for.

The coins from the San Francisco Mint were a little better that the ones from the Philadelphia Mint. Finding coins in Mint condition or near mint condition is very possible.

For collectors one of the nicest points of the 1930 Buffalo Head Nickels is the prices are very reasonable for coins with in near mint condition.

1929 Buffalo Head Nickel

1929 Buffalo Head Nickel was a pretty low minted coin from the Philadelphia Mint, only 6,446,000 coins were made. This was the lowest mintage of strikes for the 3 mints.

The coins struck were of an average quality. What is important to note is coins with mint details are not known to exist. It is believed some problems with the dies existed and even coins with very very nice details are hard to find.

The Denver Mint struck 8,370,000 coins. These coins like the ones from the Philadelphia Mint were of average quality. Coins in mint condition are very hard to find. Even coins with above average details will be difficult.

The San Francisco Mint coined 7,754,000 strikes. The coins struck were a better overall quality than the other 2 mints. With some luck you should be able to find Coin with very very nice details.

1913 Buffalo Head Nickel, The First Year

1913 was the first year the Buffalo Head Nickel (also known as the Indian Head Nickel) was minted.  Each of the 3 Mints, Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco took part in producing the coins.

In 1913 Buffalo Head Nickel was made in two types. Type I was the inital release. On the reverse the buffalo and the word Five Cent is on a raised mound. In Type II the buffalo is on a flat plain and the word Five Cents is recessed. The mint realized that the type 1 raised  areas would wear more quickly and made the changes. Only the first coins made from 1913 were Type 1. Type 2 coins were made from 1913-1938.

The Philadelphia mint minted 30,992,000 Type 1 coins and 29,856,186 Type 2 coins.

The Denver mint made 5,337,000 Type I coins and 4,156,000 Type II coins.

The San Francisco mint struck 2,105,000 Type I coins and 1,209,000 Type II coins. The San Francisco Type II  is considered to be one of the key date coins of the Buffalo Head Nickel coins.

The Philadelphia Mint minted 1,520 Type I proofs along with 1,514 Type II Matte Proof coins.

1917 Buffalo Head Nickels

51,424,029 is the number the Philadelphia Mint coined of the 1917 Buffalo Head Nickel. Most of the the coins minted were a of pretty good quality,  problems with some of the dies that were used caused some of the coins to have some surface problems making them look gritty.

9,190,800 is the number of coins the Denver Mint struck and the mint in  San Francisco made 4,193,000 coins. Most of the coins minted in Denver were of an "ok" quality but finding coins with really fine details would be a difficult task.  The coins struck at the  San Francisco Mint were weak in some of the details of the coin's key points .

Two interesting varieties are known with the 1917 Buffalo Head Nickel.

At the Philadelphia Mint Doubled Die Reverse coins have been found. The Denver Mint also had a problem with the dies overlapping creating some coins with 3 1/2 legs on the reverse. With the collectors this is a popular coin to collect.

Be aware coins with in mint condition with perfect details will be be a tough find.

The Denver Mint struck 24,814,000 coins. The coins minted were a pretty good quality and really nice ones can be found easily. Coins in mint condition with perfect details exist, but they are just hard to find.

The San Francisco Mint made 14,930,000 1936-S Buffalo Head Nickels. The San Francisco run of coins was the best of the 3 mints. Coins with perfect details exist and are not as rare as the coins produced at the other 2 mints.

Some interesting notes for the 1936 Buffalo Head Nickel. 1936 was the first year since 1916 that the Philadelphia Mint struck proof coins. 4.420 proof coins were made.

An interesting variety exists from Denver Mint. Buffalo Head coins minted with only 3 1/2 legs on the buffalo. Overlapping on the dies caused the problem.
