1935 Buffalo Nickel

The 1935 Buffalo Nickel was struck at all 3 mints in 1935. The Philadelphia Mint struck 58,264,000 coins. The Denver Mint coined 12,092,000 strikes and the San Francisco Mint minted 10,300,000 strikes.

The 1935 Buffalo Head Nickel coins minted at the Philadelphia Mint were a pretty good run of coins with regard to the quality of the coins. With such a high mintage (over 58 million coins) you should be able to find some nice coins in uncirculated mint condition. What is scarce is mint coins with perfect details.

Coins from the Denver Mint were also made with pretty good quality.
1935 D Buffalo Head Nickels in uncirculated mint condition should not be hard to find. What will be much more difficult is finding coins that are Mint condition coins with flawless details.

The coins minted in San Francisco were a average run of strikes.
Finding coins in uncirculated mint condition with nice details will be a tough job and coins that are flawless are even harder to find.

Some interesting die varieties exist with the 1935 Buffalo Nickel. The Philadelphia Mint had some coins with a Doubled Die Reverse and the Denver Mint had some coins repunched mintmarks.

1929 Buffalo Nickel was a pretty low minted coin from the Philadelphia Mint, only 6,446,000 coins were made. This was the lowest mintage of strikes for the 3 mints.

The 1929 Buffalo Head Nickel coins that were struck were of an average quality. What is important to note is coins with mint details are not known to exist. It is believed some problems with the dies existed and even coins with very very nice details are hard to find.

The Denver Mint struck 8,370,000 coins. These coins like the ones from the Philadelphia Mint were of average quality. Coins in mint condition are very hard to find. Even coins with above average details will be difficult.

The San Francisco Mint coined 7,754,000 strikes. The coins struck were a better overall quality than the other 2 mints. With some luck you should be able to find Coin with very very nice details.

1930 Buffalo Nickel

The 1930 Buffalo Nickel was only minted at 2 mints in 1930. The Philadelphia Mint struck 22,849,000 coins and the San Francisco Mint struck 5,345,000 strikes. The Denver Mint did not make any Buffalo Head Coins.

The Philadelphia Mint had an OK run of coins with most of the coins in the average range. Finding coins that are in near mint condition or above can be done, but it might take some looking for.

The coins from the San Francisco Mint were a little better that the ones from the Philadelphia Mint. Finding coins in Mint condition or near mint condition is very possible.

For collectors one of the nicest points of the 1930 Buffalo Nickels is the prices are very reasonable for coins with in near mint condition.

51,424,029 is the number the Philadelphia Mint coined of the 1917 Buffalo Nickel. Most of the the coins minted were a of pretty good quality, problems with some of the dies that were used caused some of the coins to have some surface problems making them look gritty.

9,190,800 is the number of coins the Denver Mint struck and the mint in San Francisco made 4,193,000 coins. Most of the coins minted in Denver were of an "ok" quality but finding coins with really fine details would be a difficult task. The coins struck at the San Francisco Mint were weak in some of the details of the coin's key points .

Two interesting varieties are known with the 1917 Buffalo Nickel.

At the Philadelphia Mint Doubled Die Reverse coins have been found. The Denver Mint also had a problem with the dies overlapping creating some coins with 3 1/2 legs on the reverse. With the collectors this is a popular coin to collect.

The 1913 Buffalo Nickel was the first year it (also known as the Indian Head Nickel) was minted. Each of the 3 Mints, Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco took part in producing the coins.

In 1913 Buffalo Nickel was made in two types. Type I was the initial release. On the reverse the buffalo and the word Five Cent is on a raised mound. In Type II the buffalo is on a flat plain and the word Five Cents is recessed. The mint realized that the type 1 raised areas would wear more quickly and made the changes. Only the first coins made from 1913 were Type 1. Type 2 coins were made from 1913-1938.

The Philadelphia mint minted 30,992,000 Type 1 coins and 29,856,186 Type 2 coins.

The Denver mint made 5,337,000 Type I coins and 4,156,000 Type II coins.

The San Francisco mint struck 2,105,000 Type I coins and 1,209,000 Type II coins. The San Francisco Type II is considered to be one of the key date coins of the Buffalo Nickel coins.

The Philadelphia Mint minted 1,520 Type I proofs along with 1,514 Type II Matte Proof coins.

1936 Buffalo Nickel

The 1936 Buffalo Nickel was produced in mass quantity by the Philadelphia Mint. 118,997,000 coins were minted. This was the highest number of coins minted in one year for the Buffalo Nickel. The coins minted were a pretty good overall quality. You should be able to find some nice coins for your collection. Be aware coins with in mint condition with perfect details will be be a tough find.

The Denver Mint struck 24,814,000 coins of the 1936 Buffalo Head Nickel. The coins minted were a pretty good quality and really nice ones can be found easily. Coins in mint condition with perfect details exist, but they are just hard to find.

The San Francisco Mint made 14,930,000 1936 Buffalo Nickel. The San Francisco run of coins was the best of the 3 mints. Coins with perfect details exist and are not as rare as the coins produced at the other 2 mints.

Some interesting notes for the 1936 Buffalo Nickel. 1936 was the first year since 1916 that the Philadelphia Mint struck proof coins. 4.420 proof coins were made.

An interesting variety exists from the Denver Mint. 1936 Buffalo Head coins minted with only 3 1/2 legs on the buffalo. Overlapping on the dies caused the problem.

1927 Buffalo Nickel

The Philadelphia Mint struck 37,981,000 coins of the 1927 Buffalo Nickel. The Denver Mint coined 5,730,000 and the San Francisco Mint struck 5,730,000 coins.

Coins from the Philadelphia Mint were made with pretty good overall quality. Quite a few coins exist in very very nice condition. What is hard to find is mint state coins with exquisite details.

The coins from the Denver Mint were another story when it comes to quality. Most of coins have only average details and finding very nice coins will prove to be difficult. An interesting die variety exist with the 1927 Buffalo Head Nickel. Die overlapping caused some of the coin to be made with 3 1/2 legs on the buffalo. You can also find some coins with overlapping mintmarks.

The San Francisco Mint's coins are considered key date coins.
Most of the coins made had above average details. The problem is finding them. There are not a lot of the exceptional coins available for sale.

The 1937 Buffalo Nickel

The Philadelphia Mint went crazy again with 1937 Buffalo Nickel and minted 79,480,000 coins. Not as many as in 1936 but still a lot of coins. The run of coins was pretty good and uncirculated mint coins are very available. What is rare is coins in mint condition with perfect details. The Philadelphia Mint minted 5,769 proof 1937 Buffalo Nickels. This was the last year the proof coins were made for the Buffalo Nickel series.

The Denver Mint struck 17,826,000 coins. This was a very good run of coins. Coins with perfect details are available. An interesting variety exists for the 1937-d Buffalo Head Nickel. A 3 legged coin was minted when a mint worker made an adjustment to the reverse die. The 3 legged coin has become one of the most popular coins in the series.

The San Francisco Mint struck 5,635,000 coins. This also was a above average run of coins. Finding coins in uncirculated mint condition should be pretty easy.

1938 Buffalo Nickel

The 1938 Buffalo Nickel was only minted at the Denver Mint. It is approximated the Denver Mint struck 6,620,000 coins. The run of coins minted was quite good and collectors should not have trouble in finding an uncirculated mint condition 1938 Buffalo Head Nickel.

The 1938 Buffalo Head was the last year for the Buffalo Head series. Many of the coins made were bought up and stored by collectors and dealers because they thought the coins would be more valuable. The PCGS price guide shows a value of $20,000 for a coin in MS68 condition, but only $345 for a coin in MS67 condition.

In 1928 the Philadelphia Mint made 23,411,000 coins. The 1928 Buffalo Nickel mint run of coins was overall a pretty good. You can find some very nice uncirculated coins that are still for sale. Finding mint condition coins with complete details might tough. The coins made in the late 20's had an overall decline in quality.

The Denver Mint made 6,436,000 coins in 1928. The overall quality of the Denver Mint's Buffalo Head coins was lousy. Not many very nice coins with above average details were struck. Coins with excellent details are not known to exist. The best news for collectors is that very nice coins are still available.

The San Francisco Mint struck 6,966,000 coins. The 1928 S Buffalo Head Nickel was a good mint run and many coins with above average details were made. Finding one should not be a problem.
