1913 Buffalo Head Nickel Interesting Varieties

Their are 4 different varietes of the 1913 Buffalo Head Nickel. 3 varieties for Type I and 1 variety for Type II.

At the Philadelphia Mint an overlapping on the reverse die caused one of the front legs of the buffalo to become very unclear and created what is know as 3 1/2 legs. This affected coins in the Type I series.

At the Denver and San Francisco Mints problems with the obverse die caused the disappearance of the third feather. The coins affected were in the Type I series

The last interesting variety was from the Philadelphia mint. Some of the coins were found to have slight die doubling in the date area of the coin.

1913 Buffalo Head Nickel, The First Year

1913 was the first year the Buffalo Head Nickel (also known as the Indian Head Nickel) was minted. Each of the 3 Mints, Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco took part in producing the coins.

In 1913 Buffalo Head Nickel was made in two types. Type I was the inital release. On the reverse the buffalo and the word Five Cent is on a raised mound. In Type II the buffalo is on a flat plain and the word Five Cents is recessed. The mint realized that the type 1 raised areas would wear more quickly and made the changes. Only the first coins made from 1913 were Type 1. Type 2 coins were made from 1913-1938.

The Philadelphia mint minted 30,992,000 Type 1 coins and 29,856,186 Type 2 coins.

The Denver mint made 5,337,000 Type I coins and 4,156,000 Type II coins.

The San Francisco mint struck 2,105,000 Type I coins and 1,209,000 Type II coins. The San Francisco Type II is considered to be one of the key date coins of the Buffalo Head Nickel coins.

The Philadelphia Mint minted 1,520 Type I proofs along with 1,514 Type II Matte Proof coins.

1917 Buffalo Head Nickels

51,424,029 is the number the Philadelphia Mint coined of the 1917 Buffalo Head Nickel. Most of the the coins minted were a of pretty good quality, problems with some of the dies that were used caused some of the coins to have some surface problems making them look gritty.

9,190,800 is the number of coins the Denver Mint struck and the mint in San Francisco made 4,193,000 coins. Most of the coins minted in Denver were of an "ok" quality but finding coins with really fine details would be a difficult task. The coins struck at the San Francisco Mint were weak in some of the details of the coin's key points .

Two interesting varieties are known with the 1917 Buffalo Head Nickel.

At the Philadelphia Mint Doubled Die Reverse coins have been found. The Denver Mint also had a problem with the dies overlapping creating some coins with 3 1/2 legs on the reverse. With the collectors this is a popular coin to collect.

1915 Buffalo Head Nickels

The Philadelphia Mint struck 20,986,220 of the 1915 Buffalo Head Nickels. Most of these coins were considered to be above average quality and very eye appealing coins to look at.

The Philadelphia Mint minted 1,050 Matte Proof Coins. It has been found that on a few of the Matte Proof Coins a small die crack is present on the reverse.

The Denver Mint coined 7,569,500 and the San Francisco Mint made 1,505,500 coins. The coins made at the Denver Mint were not made to with attention to detail and therefore finding a coin with nice detail and quality can be difficult. At the San Francisco Mint the coins that were struck have nice details. It was suspected that Proof dies made have been used when the coins were struck.

Some interesting varieties exist with the 1915 Buffalo Head Nickel.
Of the coins minted at the Philadelphia Mint their has been found some coins that have a little die doubling in the date area and also on some coins overlapping of the dies caused the third feather to be removed.

At the Denver Mint a Large D was over punched on smaller D and at the San Francisco Mint their were coins with re punched mint marks.

1919 Buffalo Head Nickel

In 1919 the Philadelphia Mint made 60,868,000 coins. Many of these coins were made with very nice details because the mint used more dies than usual to in minting the 1919 Buffalo head Nickel. When you do your shopping take your time and be patient.

The Denver Mint struck 8,006,000 coins in 1919. If your looking one in mint condition that might be a little hard to find. Coins in lesser condition should be available.

The San Francisco Mint had the lowest mintage of the 3 at 7,521,000 strikes. The 1919 S Buffalo Head Nickel is available in all type of conditions. The key with this date is that less than 1% of the coins have full strike details.

1918 Buffalo Head Nickels

In 1918 all 3 mints produced the 1918 Buffalo Head Nickels.

The Philadelphia Mint minted 32,086,314 coins. The Denver Mint struck 8,362,000 coins and the SanFrancisco Mint coined 4,882,000 coins.

Th coins minted at the Philadelphia Mint were made in variety of grades and if you take your time you can find one that has nice details for your collection.

The grade of coins from the Denver Mint was of a poorer quality and finding coins with nice detail will not be the easiest.

The quality of the coins from San francisco Mint varies poor to ones with nice detail. Most coins are are average, by shopping around you can find some nice coins for your collection.

1918/7 D Buffalo Head Nickel Keydate Coin

The 1918/7 D Buffalo Head Nickel is considered a Keydate coin for the Buffalo Head Nickel series. The coin was minted at the Denver Mint. It is estimated that only 100,000 of these coins were minted.

Barney Bluestone is credited with the find and it was printed about in 1931 in an auction catalog. The coin collecting community was slow to find out about 1918/7 coin. The result is that coins in quality condition are very hard to find. The usual coin will vary from very good to very fine.

It is believed that the 1918/7 D Buffalo Head Nickel coins were struck from one set of dies that were pretty worn.

The prices on the 1918/7 D coin can vary from $1,400 for G-4 to $375,000 for MS-65. These prices are based on PCGS Graded Coins.

1916 Buffalo Head Nickels

The Philadelphia Mint minted 63,497,466 coins of the 1916 Buffalo Head Nickels. In the 1916 run of coins a slight adjustment to the word LIBERTY on the Obverse was made, making it more pronounced. Overall the coins made were considered to be of good quality.

The Philadelphia Mint minted only 600 Matte Proof Coins.

An interesting variety was found with the 1916 Buffalo Head Nickel.
In some coins a doubled die obverse date was found but only was published about the find in 1962. The find is considered significant and makes the 1916 one of the most sought after varieties of Buffalo Head Nickels.

The Denver Mint struck 13,333,000 coins and the San Francisco Mint made 11,860,000 coins.

1914 Buffalo Head Nickels

The 1914 Buffalo Head Nickels were struck by the 3 mints, The Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco Mints.

At the Philadelphia Mint 20,665,463 coins were struck. The Denver Mint minted 3,192,000 and at the San Francisco Mint 3,470,000 coins were minted.

The Philadelphia Mint struck 1,275 matte proof coins.

With the 1914 Buffalo Head Nickel two interesting varieties exist. Coins minted at the Philadelphia and San Francisco mints had some over-date problems that caused what are called 1914/3 strikes. Coins minted at these 2 mints have a slight horizontal ridge across the top of the 4.

It is believed that approximately 220,000-330,000 coins were made this way at the Philadelphia Mint.

The 1914/3 that were made at the San Fancisco Mint are very hard to seen and it was only in 1997 that Thomas K. Delorey discovered it. It is estimated that about 110,000 coins were made this way.
