1920 Buffalo Head Nickel

The 1920 Buffalo Head Nickel was struck by all 3 mints. 62,093,000 were minted by the Philly Mint. 9,418,000 were coined by the Denver Mint and the San Francisco Mint made 9,689,000.

The coins made at the Philadelphia Mint were not made of the best quality. Many of the coins points' of details are weak and on most coins the luster is poor. Fortunately for collectors, with the Mint making over 62 million 1920 Buffalo Head Nickels, there are enough good coins to go around.

The coins from the Denver Mint lacked great details. Many of them were made with varying quality. Finding nice ones may proof to be difficult.

The run of coins from the San Francisco Mint were pretty lousy. Coins with full details are very hard to find, if not impossible. The reverse of many of the coins is poor because of problems with the dies when the coins were struck.

1913 Buffalo Head Nickel Interesting Varieties

Their are 4 different varietes of the 1913 Buffalo Head Nickel. 3 varieties for Type I and 1 variety for Type II.

At the Philadelphia Mint an overlapping on the reverse die caused one of the front legs of the buffalo to become very unclear and created what is know as 3 1/2 legs. This affected coins in the Type I series.

At the Denver and San Francisco Mints problems with the obverse die caused the disappearance of the third feather. The coins affected were in the Type I series

The last interesting variety was from the Philadelphia mint. Some of the coins were found to have slight die doubling in the date area of the coin.

1925 Buffalo Head Nickel

The 1925 Buffalo Head Nickels were again minted by all 3 mints. The Philadelphia Mint minted 35,565,000 coins. The Denver Mint struck 4,450,000 coins and the San Francisco mint minted 6,256,000 strikes.

The 1925 Buffalo Head Nickel struck at the Philadelphia Mint would not be considered a great run coins. Most of the coins minted were typical strikes with average details. Lacking were coins that have total details and really standout when you see them.

The coins struck at the Denver Mint also were not the best quality of coins. Most coins lacked great details. Finding a really nice coins will be difficult.

The San Francisco coins might be the worse run that the 3 mints put out that year. Coins with complete details are very tough to find. Many of the coins minted had flaws when they were made, in the areas of the lettering, the buffalo's fur and the centers of the coins.
If your looking for uncirculated coins make sure they have not been altered or cleaned before you buy.

1926 Buffalo Head Nickels

44,693,000 is the number of coins the Philadelphia Mint made of the 1926 Buffalo Head Nickel. Most of the the coins minted were a of pretty good quality, Buffalo Heads with nice details should be easy to find. If your looking for the mint state perfect coins that will be another story. Coins in mint state are very scarce.

The Denver Mint struck 5,638,000 coins. The Denver Mint's 1926 D Buffalo Head Nickels were like the Philadelphia Mint and made with good overall quality. Very nice coins can be found, but finding coins with complete details will prove to be difficult.

The San Francisco mint only minted 970,000 coins. The 1926 S Buffalo Head Nickel is considered a semi-key date coin for the Buffalo series. Two reasons are: The low number of coins struck and the condition of the coins that were struck. Most coins were only average coins with OK details. Coins with full details are non-existent and coins with sharp details are quite scarce.

1935 Buffalo Head Nickel

The 1935 Buffalo Head Nickel was struck at all 3 mints in 1935. The Philadelphia Mint struck 58,264,000 coins. The Denver Mint coined 12,092,000 strikes and the San Francisco Mint minted 10,300,000 strikes.

The coins minted at the Philadelphia Mint were a pretty good run of coins with regard to the quality of the coins. With such a high mintage (over 58 million coins) you should be able to find some nice coins in uncirculated mint condition. What is scarce is mint coins with perfect details.

Coins from the Denver Mint were also made with pretty good quality.
1935 D Buffalo Head Nickels in uncirculated mint condition should not be hard to find. What will be much more difficult is finding coins that are Mint condition coins with flawless details.

The coins minted in San Francisco were a average run of strikes.
Finding coins in uncirculated mint condition with nice details will be a tough job and coins that are flawless are even harder to find.

Some interesting die varieties exist with the 1935 Buffalo Head Nickel. The Philadelphia Mint had some coins with a Doubled Die Reverse and the Denver Mint had some coins repunched mintmarks.
